When Rondo was lost for the season. Lee and Bradley didn't skip a beat. They were coined the "Pitbulls". As the season was hitting the home stretch, Courtney Lee suffered an ankle sprain. In his absence Crawford stepped up. When Lee returned, he really never returned. In the playoffs Lee was hardly used. When he was out there he wasn't an impact for the Celtics. The C's could have really used his defense against the likes of Felton, and even Smith.
"He refuses, though, to blame health for his inability to rediscover his form at either end of the floor late in the season."
“The ankle happened awhile ago,” he said. “I’m not going to blame things on that.”
He’s due to be paid roughly $16.4 million over the next three seasons by the Celtics. Is Lee a 5 million a year player? He may have been that in spurts in 2012-13, but when it mattered Lee was riding the bench. Lee is looking forward to Rondo, and I find that funny because Lee played his best ball with Rondo out. Lee and Rondo never built a chemistry.
“It’s definitely going to change,” said Lee. “Rondo’s a playmaker. But when he was playing I had a different role. I was the backup point guard. Avery can slide back into his natural position. How it changes is if we go back to playing the way we did at the beginning of the year, going back to that rotation.
“Man, I’m trying to keep it 100 percent,” Lee said of trying to maintain his confidence. “I’m not the coach, I’m just a player on the team. I’m here to do what the team needs me to do, and what the coach needs me to do, and if he needs me to be a cheerleader, then that’s what I need to do.”
I don't view Lee as a back up point guard, and the Celtics can't go that route again. They need to plan on giving Rondo rest this season. Especially with him returning from major surgery. I'd have to say Williams has proven that he can be an adequate back up over Lee. I think the Celtics need to look at their wing situation. They have a stock pile of guys. Williams, Lee, Terry, and Crawford.
I think the Celtics need to part ways with one of those guys. I don't want to get into the trading of players part of the off season just yet. But Lee,and Terry make make over million a season. Who's the best fit for this team next season? It all depends I suppose on the Pierce situation. The Celtics can't avoid the big man issue anymore. They need to find an edge in the East. Playing like the Heat won't win us a title. The Bulls, and the Pacers are built with bigs, and I think that's the way to go. It's how the Celtics won in the past. How do they get back there, I don't know yet.
